Mazda3 Coilovers: The Fundamentals

Before diving into the meat of this article, it’s important to understand the fundamentals of coilovers. What exactly are coilovers? What is the distinction between shock absorbers, struts, and coilovers? What role do springs and/or lowering springs play in this discussion? Suspension mods can often be perplexing and overwhelming. There are numerous parts, and some names are used interchangeably.

As a result, in the following sections, we’ll go over some of the fundamentals of coilovers. Then we get into some of the more technical topics, such as what to look for in a Mazda3 coilovers kit. Hopefully, this information will help you figure out what you’re looking for in a set of coilovers.

The Upgrade Guide for Mazda3 Coilovers

Shocks vs. Struts vs. Coilovers on Mazda

The primary focus of this article is shock absorbers, also known as shocks. This is because struts and coilovers are, at their core, shock absorbers. A shock is essentially a hydraulic pump that uses fluid to dampen impacts and rebound.

A strut is nothing more than a shock with a coil spring collar attached. This enables you to mount the coil springs on the shock absorber so that the spring coils around the shock. Struts are sometimes referred to as coilovers, which is correct in some ways. It’s a spring that’s wrapped around the shock.

A true coilover design, on the other hand, allows for height adjustment. This means that the coil spring collar can be installed in a variety of locations on the shock absorber. To raise or lower the Mazda3, simply move the spring mounting location up or down. Coilovers frequently have various levels of dampening and rebounding adjustability. More on that in a moment.

Coil Springs for Mazda3 and MazdaSpeed3

When it comes to suspension setups, coil springs are one of the most important topics. The Mazda3’s entire weight is supported by the springs. They are quite possibly the most important component of the suspension.

They play an important role in dealing with a variety of situations. Body roll is controlled by coil springs while cornering, braking, and accelerating. They also keep the car from crashing into the bump stops. A lot goes into selecting the best coil springs for a Mazda3 coilovers kit. As a result, this topic is discussed in greater depth several times throughout this article.

Advantages of Mazda Coilovers Upgrade

Mazda3 and MazdaSpeed3 coilovers provide a great deal of versatility. With the right coilover upgrade, you can do a variety of things. However, before purchasing, it is critical to understand your goals, budget, and needs. There are numerous advantages to using coilovers, but no single set will provide all of them. Some of the advantages of Mazda3 coilovers include:

  • Ride height can be adjusted
  • Shock absorbers that can be adjusted (rebound, dampening)
  • Improved handling, braking, and so on.
  • Improved ride quality and comfort
  • Replace worn-out suspension components.

We’ll go over the first couple bullets in greater detail in their own sections below. One important reason to upgrade coilovers is to improve handling, braking, and cornering. If this is your ultimate goal, you are unlikely to get better ride quality. With a great set of adjustable coilovers, it’s possible, but it’s not the norm.

Suspension is otherwise a wear and tear item. Even after 8-10 years and 100,000 miles, it may still be safe and functional. However, the old suspension is unlikely to provide the same performance and comfort it once did. If your suspension is showing signs of wear, it may be time to upgrade to Mazda3 coilovers.

Rates of Mazda 3 and MazdaSpeed3 Coil Springs

Again, spring rates are critical when it comes to Mazda3 coilovers. This is typically stated as something like 350 lbs/in, for example. In this case, 350 pounds of force would be required to compress the spring 1 inch. A higher number indicates a spring that is stiffer and more aggressive. But stiffer is not always better.

Without extensive testing, there is no perfect answer for the best spring rates. As a result, it’s best to leave the spring rates up to the coilover manufacturers (or provide the right options for you to choose). So, when should you opt for stiffer or softer springs?

If you intend to significantly lower your Mazda3, stiffer springs will be required. Going too soft may cause the car to bottom out on the bump stops, resulting in an unpleasant ride. Softer spring rates are also ideal for bumpy, uneven surfaces. A spring that is too stiff can unsettle the chassis and reduce grip and handling.

Track cars benefit from stiff springs because the surfaces are often smoother. A stiff spring will help reduce body roll and weight transfer, resulting in better grip. Again, on bumpier roads, this isn’t always the case.

Mazda3 Ride Height Modifications

Most MazdaSpeed3 and Mazda3 coilovers have a lowering range of about 0-2.5′′. There are also some kits that allow for up to 3-4″ of lowering. These are typically designed for stance rather than all-out handling. Some aggressive and track coilover kits may only allow for a maximum lowering of 1-1.5 inches.

The point is to be aware of the height adjustment ranges for various kits. If you want to lower and stance your vehicle, you’ll want something with a wider range. Consider wheel spacers, rolled fenders, and other modifications if you want to go significantly lower. Those looking for performance upgrades are probably less concerned with drastically lowering their Mazda3.

Rebound/Damping Adjustments for Mazda3 Coilovers

For Mazda3 coilovers, rebound and compression damping adjustments are critical. Those who prefer to set it and forget it are unlikely to care much about adjustment. It is, however, a great option for dialing in different settings for different uses. The shock absorbers’ characteristics can be completely altered.

Compression damping regulates how the suspension absorbs bumps and uneven surfaces. Rebound then assists the shocks in returning to their original position. The effect is similar to that of spring rates. Stiff is ideal for smoother surfaces such as race tracks. Moderate or softer settings, on the other hand, aid in comfort and handling on less smooth surfaces.

The ability to change these settings provides a great deal of flexibility. You can stiffen the shocks if you go to the racetrack or out in the canyons. Then, return them to normal levels for daily driving and street use. As a result, if you want versatile Mazda3 coilovers, you’ll want an adjustable option.

Anyway, there’s not much else to say about Raceland. They are truly excellent Mazda3 coilovers for the price. We don’t recommend them if you’re looking for the ultimate handling package. However, if you only want a minor upgrade, want to lower your car, or replace old OEM suspension, Raceland is an excellent choice.

1) Raceland Mazda3 Coilovers

Street & Stance Entry Level

Price: $419-519

The first is one of our personal favorites for a variety of vehicles, not just the Mazda3. Raceland produces high-quality coilovers at an unusually low price. They will not be the best coilovers for comfort or handling. The Raceland coilovers, on the other hand, do exactly what they’re supposed to do.

They are high-quality, entry-level coilovers at an affordable price from a company that provides excellent customer service and stands behind their product. At this price, you really can’t ask for anything more. Raceland is difficult to beat unless you want aggressive street or track coilovers and are willing to spend $800 or more.

Raceland Mazda3 coilovers are available for all Mazda3 and Speed3 model years. The Classic coilovers, which allow for a 1-3′′ drop, cost around $419. Then, for an additional $30, you can get the Ultimos, which have a lowering range of 2-4 inches. At $519, a few models get the Primo coilovers with adjustable damping.

Anyway, there’s not much else to say about Raceland. They are truly excellent Mazda3 coilovers for the price. We don’t recommend them if you’re looking for the ultimate handling package. 2) Mazda 3 Rev9 Damping Adjustable Coilovers

Entry-Mid Level Street

Price: $532

The Upgrade Guide for Mazda3 Coilovers

The Rev9 kit is a bit of a wildcard on this list because we’re not too familiar with the brand. However, at $532, it’s a good value for 32-way damping adjustment. Outside of the Raceland Primo coilovers, this is about as cheap as adjustable coilovers get. This kit also includes the top hats and camber plates. Camber plates are a whole other lengthy topic, but they’re a good addition to improve handling.

For just over $500, they may be worth a shot to get the adjustability and camber plates. Those looking for the best handling will have to spend more money on higher-end kits. That said, we’ll leave it at that for Rev9 and move on to one of our favorite options for all-out street/track handling and performance.

3) MazdaSpeed3 KW Coilover Kits

Tier: Top-Tier Street & Entry-Level Track

Price: $1,679 – 2,489

The Upgrade Guide for Mazda3 Coilovers

In the coilovers industry, KW is a household name. They’re well-known for a reason. KW coilovers offers a variety of kits ranging from mild street to full-on track setups. However, you do pay a bit more for KW coilovers due to their decades of proven, high-quality kits.

The KW Variant 1 (V1) coilovers are the only primary option for the Mazda3. These have a height range of about 1.2 to 2.2 inches. However, they do not provide any rebound or compression damping. At $1,679, this is a lot of money for a non-adjustable kit, but these are still the real deal. They’re pre-set after extensive testing for a great balance of sport and comfort.

The KW V3 coilovers provide another option for MazdaSpeed3 owners. They cost $2,489, so you’re definitely paying to play here. These KW V3 Mazda3 coilover kits improve compression and rebound damping. It’s a high-end street kit that also works well on the track. Finally, if you’re willing to pay the price, the KW V1 and V3 coilovers provide excellent performance.

Summary of Mazda 3 Coilover Upgrades

The Mazda3 is a fantastic car with a sporty feel and excellent handling. With a few simple engine bolt-on mods, Speed3 variants can also be very capable. A set of Mazda3 coilovers, on the other hand, is likely one of the best all-around mods. Coilovers provide a lot of versatility and options.

A set of coilovers is a great way to go if you want better handling, performance, lowering, or simply replacing old suspension. Spring rates and damping are important factors to consider depending on your specific goals. There are numerous excellent options available once you know what you’re looking for.

Raceland Mazda3 coilovers are among our favorites for stance or entry-level street performance. At this price point, it’s difficult to compete with their quality and customer service. Rev9 appears to be a promising budget option with some adjustability. Otherwise, those seeking maximum performance should look into the KW V1 and V3 coilover kits.
